Gitxsan Alphabet

You will build your vocabulary and learn the sounds to pronounce the words. Work with an Elder or mentor to make sure you complete the alphabet. This will prepare you for putting together sentences.

A word about “Front” and “Back” sounds: Blow like you would blow out a candle, that is “Front”. Now pretend you are clearing a fish bone from your throat. That is “Back”. This may be helpful to remember.

Greetings are one of the most used phrases as well as “Feeling” phrases like “How are you?” and responses like”I’m feeling sick”. Practice over a cup of tea with your Grandparents, Parents, family, Elder or mentor to make sure you understand and can say the words and phrases.

Clear communication with people starts when we wake up and throughout the day. Think of the first things you say to your loved ones, co-workers and friends. We ask about how we feel, what we are doing, where we are going, asking a question, giving information about a person, place or thing. This is where your practise of the Gitxsan Alphabet works for you.
